Hong Kong Issues Smoking Fines on Construction Sites

Smoldering Issue: Hong Kong's Construction Site Smoking Ban Falters The citywide ban on smoking at construction sites in Hong Kong, introduced to mitigate the risk of devastating fires like the one that ravaged Wang Fuk Court last November, has gotten off to a shaky start.

According to Commissioner for Labour Sam Hui Chark shum, authorities issued 21 fixed penalty notices and five improvement notices in the first six days of the ban, along with hundreds of written warnings.

These numbers might seem relatively low, but when considering the sheer scale of construction activity in Hong Kong – over 530 sites were inspected during this period – it's clear that non compliance is a more widespread problem than initially meets the eye.
